Drunk Girls On…Food: 33 Re Chao 33區熱炒

Re chao is Chinese for fried food. And while yes, it seems unlikely to claim that out of all the Taiwanese food that is fried, there is a particular kind of fried food within all that fried goodness that is a different kind of fried, but lo and behold, there is. 33 Re Chao can be hit and miss with some of their dishes, they claim to particularly specialise in seafood, and we were served a sashimi that was still frozen so we weren’t particularly impressed on that front. But what surprised us about this place was the Kung Pao Chicken, a dish that is slightly different than the Western interpretation at the local Chinese round the corner. As we’ve mentioned before, chicken is not necessarily something remarkable in Taiwanese cuisine, but when they do it right, they fucking do it right.

Don’t forget to grab some of the eggplant and basil, and there’s one stinky tofu dish that’s delicious. The main point of re chao restaurants is to drink a lot with a big group of friends, you will definitely see a couple of tables of old Taiwanese men downing* a bottle of whiskey very quickly, so make sure to join suit or at least grab a few bottles of Classic Taiwan Beer to be at one with the locals. Each time we’ve eaten here it’s been 300-400ntd per person depending on the group size.

*Tip to make the locals like you a lot: every time you want to down a glass of whatever’s in your hand, yell ‘ganbei’ and clink with everyone, when taken seriously it means ‘finish your glass’, but is also just a fun way of saying cheers!
